Hello

I’m Ashleigh, and this is my blog. At the moment, it’s a blog about, well, just cycling around and sometimes the things I think about while cycling.

I’m always keen to hear your thoughts on anything I write. Drop me a comment or an email: ashleigh [dot] young [at] gmail [dot] com

Please keep in mind I have an extremely thin skin and will remember anything you say for the rest of my life and until death.

I work as an editor at Te Herenga Waka University Press and write around the edges, with a few recent-ish pieces at The Spinoff (here’s one on UFOs) and Newsroom (here’s one on nootropics).

Thank you for reading! I really appreciate it.

PS.

My latest book is a poetry collection called How I Get Ready.

Here’s a collection of essays I wrote which you can also buy (also with Giramondo in Australia, Riverhead Books in the US, and Bloomsbury in the UK).

    Hi Ashleigh,

I heard, on the radio, a poem written by you called “Guide”. It completely stopped me in my tracks. I was about to go into the supermarket but I just sat in the car and listened with that same beautiful feeling you get when you look at a painting and it keeps drawing your eyes back to it. I couldn’t look away from your poem. Will now be following your blog.

    Regards,
    Belinda

      Hi Belinda,

That is the loveliest thing. Thank you very very much indeed. It’s not every day that someone says they sat in the car and listened to you. I will get a lot of good mileage out of that. And thank you for following the blog!

      All the best
      Ashleigh

    Hi Ashleigh,

I read GriffithReview page at https://griffithreview.com/articles/interview-with-ashleigh-young/. It mentioned that you have essay collection called “Can You Tolerate This?”. I am wondering this is a published one or where I can find the link to read.

Hey there Hong, unfortunately my collection is, erm, as yet unpublished! I have had to revise it substantially. But I’m nearly there with it. It will probably be ready next year. Thank you for asking about it 🙂

    Hi Ashleigh,

I listened to the podcast ‘The paroxetine diaries’ today. I think it takes some courage to write/talk about these things. I’m glad you did as I stumbled across it randomly and found it very helpful.

    Wish you all the best.

I have just listened to your podcast on stuff, you are the first person that has made me think – fuck, this person thinks like i do, this person feels like i do. This person is normal and successful and living- just like me- but still doesn’t want to see what others see in themselves. Thank you for helping me see there is at least one person who understands how you can feel awesome about climbing a mountain but at the same time, want to throw yourself off it. Thank you and i will follow your blog.

  5. Also (she says familiarly, as if you recall my comment just made on your recent blog post) I feel* a strong correlation between the recent New Zealand books I have really enjoyed and the fact that the authors gush embarrassingly about what an amazing editor you are. Great job.

*yes, yes. Correlation does not mean causation. But let’s just go with it this time. I feel it in my waters.
